Coronavirus doily, part 9

This part is composed of two rounds – and they’re the same.  You can get from one round to the next with a split chain.
For the first round, joins are made into the middle picot of the 3-picot chains of the previous round.   CH: 8-8+ around.

Second round is the same: CH: 8-8+ (into p of round below).
You can see from the photo that it's a little ruffled, but this should be corrected by the end...  and the end IS in sight, I promise!

More after this weekend!

Part 8

Hello all - this part is simple - we needed simple about now, didn't we?  Using a ball and shuttle, %^% where two Rs are "toes to toes" in the previous round, R: 4+ (to side p of first R) 4+ (to side p of second R) 4.
CH:  5-5-5-5+ (into top p of single R) 5-5-5-5
Repeat from %^% around...

Coronavirus doily part 7

As the doily expands, the rounds are getting a bit longer to make.  No fear, the end IS in sight.  For this round, you’ll be using the lock chain and two shuttles wound CTM, to allow you to change shuttles when one is getting used up faster than the other.  Everything on this round is tatted in multiples of five.  You’ll see the entire doily - thus far - and a close up in the photos.

&&& R: 5-5+ (see the four-picot chains of the round before?  Join into any second CH p, counting from the left) 5-5.
Lock CH 5 (one transferred half stitch and one un-transferred half stitch, five times)
Using whichever shuttle works best by the position it’s in,
          R: 5-5-5-5.
            R: 5-5-5-5
Lock CH 5
R: 5+ (to last R p of first R) 5+ (to next CH p) 5-5
Lock CH 5
R: 5+ (to middle R p, 3rd CH) 5-5-5.
Lock CH 5.
Repeat from &&& .  Notice the inner Rs are joined to the two middle picots of the CH from the last round.  You’ll skip the first and last picots on each CH, and those inner Rs are joined in pairs.  The outer Rs are all joined to each other.  A Ring joined by the side picots alternates between paired Rs, joined to the single Rs by their middle picots.
You’ll tat around the whole round in this way, and it will take a while.  I think it took me at least six hours!

Coronavirus doily part 6

This is another long round, made longer (for me) by a pause to sew 16 cloth masks, 15 of them donated to the hospital, one for me so I don't go out wearing a bandana like a 19th century bank robber; then finding a mistake I had to cut back to…  and also, as the doily gets larger, everything is going to take longer anyway, right?  For this one, you’ll need two shuttles wound CTM.  You’ll notice it’s not finished.  What you see here represents at least 4 hours’ work, including fixing errors.  At least, the ones I’ve noticed.

R: 12-9-3.
••R: 3+9-12.
RW.  CH: 5-5-5-5-5 (four picots).  RW
Drop a loop and begin mock ring: CH 5
Using ball thread shuttle, R: 10+ (to last p of last R) 5+ (to p on CH of previous round, 14.
   Continue CH: 5-5
Using ball thread shuttle, R: 14+ (to next p on CH of previous round) 5-10
   Finish mock R CH: 5
Post shuttle through dropped loop, close mock R, tie, RW.
CH: 5-5-5-5-5 (four picots).  RW
R: 12+ (to last p on last R off mock R) 9-3.
Repeat from •• around, joining last CH into base of first paired Rs.  Tie, cut and sew in ends.
This sewing-in of ends is important because you’re sparing yourself doing the whole job later and the ends won’t get in your way as you move on to tat the next round.  In size 50 tatting cotton, this round, when finished, will be a whopping 7 inches across.  (this is me being ironic.)
